EMDR Therapy in Albuquerque, New Mexico

Finally move past what’s been keeping you stuck

If anxiety, past experiences, or overwhelming emotions keep showing up in your life, you may be ready to understand and work through what’s underneath.

You may know logically that something is in the past, but still find yourself reacting as though it’s happening now. Certain memories, situations, or relationships may trigger strong emotional responses, anxiety, shutdown, avoidance, or a sense of being stuck.

EMDR therapy can help you process difficult experiences so they have less power over how you feel and respond in the present.

You Might Be Here Because…

  • You feel anxious, overwhelmed, or on edge even when you can't always explain why.

  • A past experience still affects how you feel, think, or respond.

  • Certain memories, situations, or relationships trigger strong emotional reactions.

  • You understand what happened, but still feel like your body or nervous system hasn't caught up.

  • You find yourself avoiding certain situations, shutting down, or feeling disconnected.

  • You want to work through something difficult without having to spend years talking about it.

EMDR Therapy Helps You Process What’s Been Stuck

Sometimes we can understand something intellectually without feeling like we've actually moved through it.

EMDR—Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing—is a structured, trauma-focused therapy that helps people process distressing experiences and memories that continue to affect them.

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements or alternating taps or sounds, while you briefly focus on aspects of a difficult experience.

The goal is not to erase what happened. It's to help your brain and nervous system process the experience differently, so the memory or experience feels less overwhelming and you have more freedom in how you respond today.

What Can EMDR Help With?

EMDR was originally developed to treat trauma and post-traumatic stress, and it is also used with a range of concerns involving distressing experiences and emotional responses.

It may be helpful for:

  • Trauma and difficult experiences

  • Post-traumatic stress symptoms

  • Anxiety and fear

  • Distressing or intrusive memories

  • Emotional reactions that feel difficult to control

  • Experiences that continue to affect relationships

  • Avoidance, shutdown, or feeling emotionally stuck

  • Patterns that you understand intellectually but haven't been able to change

  • Athletic & Creative Blocks

EMDR isn't the right approach for everyone or every concern. We'll consider your history, current needs, goals, and readiness together to determine whether it may be a good fit.

You Don't Have to Relive Everything

One of the concerns I hear from people considering trauma therapy is the fear that they'll have to tell their entire story or repeatedly relive painful experiences.

You don't have to.

EMDR doesn't require you to describe every detail of what happened. We'll work at a pace that feels manageable and focus on the experiences, emotions, beliefs, body sensations, or patterns that are relevant to what you're experiencing now.

You remain in control of what you share throughout the process.

What to Expect

1. Start With Your Story

We'll talk about what brings you to therapy, what you're experiencing now, and what you'd like to change. This gives us an opportunity to determine whether EMDR is appropriate for you.

2. Build a Foundation

Before processing difficult experiences, we'll establish resources and strategies to help you feel grounded and supported. We won't rush into processing before you're ready.

3. Begin Processing

When you're ready, I'll guide you through the EMDR process while you briefly focus on specific aspects of an experience and use bilateral stimulation.

4. Notice What Changes

As experiences become more fully processed, they may feel less emotionally charged. You may find that memories are easier to think about, triggers have less intensity, and you have more choice in how you respond.

EMDR at Encompass Counseling

At Encompass Counseling, EMDR is part of an integrative and collaborative approach to therapy.

I'm trained in EMDR through Level 2 with EMDRIA, and I also draw from attachment-based, experiential, somatic, and parts-based approaches.

Rather than using one treatment approach for everyone, we'll consider what makes sense for you—your history, your goals, and where you are in the process.

The focus isn't on choosing a modality first.

We'll start with you.

WHAT IS EMDR THERAPY?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy that helps your brain process and heal from difficult experiences.

Instead of only talking about problems, EMDR works at a deeper level—helping your nervous system reprocess what’s been stuck and triggered over time.

As your brain reprocesses these experiences, you may notice:

  • Triggers feel less intense

  • You feel calmer and more grounded

  • Old patterns begin to shift

  • You respond instead of react

Traditional talk therapy focus on retelling your traumatic experience

EMDR helps you actually resolve your symptoms.

You don’t have to:

  • Relive everything in detail

  • Stay stuck analyzing the same patterns

  • Spend years trying to “figure it out”

Instead, EMDR helps your brain do what it’s naturally designed to do: heal.

You don’t have to keep feeling this way.

If you’re ready to move forward—not just cope—EMDR therapy can help.
